Article taken from St.Ives Times and Echo / Hayle Times June 19th Lib Dems to face electoral defeat? ST IVES would return to being a Conservative seat at the next general election if voting patterns in the recent European and local elections is repeated next year. The Liberal Democrats suffered heavy losses, particularly in the Cornwall Council Elections which resulted in the Conservatives being the largest group on the authority. Cornwall had been considered a solid area for the Liberal Democrats but their future is less certain, particularly with the next election due in less than a year. Analysis shows Andrew George, Julia Goldsworthy and Nick Harvey could all be defeated by the Conservatives. Liberal Democrats have pointed out that local election results are rarely repeated at general elections and have played down claims they are due to make heavy losses next year. At the recent local elections the Liberal Democrats trailed the Conservatives who recieved 34% of the vote. Liberal Democrats received 28%.
